Modern embedded computing systems require high-performance processors to execute sophisticated algorithms, but most architectural techniques that improve performance do so at the cost of real-time performance. Mechanisms such as pipelining, speculative execution, and caches not only cause the execution time of an operation to depend on context, but in many cases it is difficult to predict execution time. This workshop will study the relationship between high-performance and real-time architectures. Some techniques for improving the predictability of embedded computing architectures have appeared over the past decade, but as high-performance embedded processors become ubiquitous, the community needs to more intensively study architectural predictability. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Analysis of architectural predictability. * Predictable memory systems. * Predictable pipelines. * Predictable multiprocessors. * Speculation mechanisms. * Self-aware and self-measuring real-time architectures and programs. * Real-time and low-power computing. * Reconfigurable architectures and real time. * Worst-case timing analysis of complex architectures.
